Adle Silverstone

Adle Silverstone is one of Thalion Paurgiliath Arch Duke of Eltán's household knights.

She is the mother of four of Thalion’s many children. Their oldest son died in the Fall of Harn, helping Adle escape with the twins, who are nearing adulthood. The youngest son was born on Arda.

She works with Calmacila Paurgiliath on breeding and preserving the Harnic Blue Ox, a much prized gigantic breed of oxen.

She rides a Harnic Blue Ox, enormous even for the breed, into battle. Calmacila Paurgiliath and Artano Paurgiliath worked together to make oxen sized full plate barding, and Adle purchased custom sized horseshoes of speed, with a spare, before the fall of Harn.

She is ambidextrous, and trained in two weapon fighting. She specializes in Longsword, and usually fights with two, but also practiced iajutsu (quickdraw) with hand ax, so that she can switch her returning throwing ax to one hand in combat.

Character History

Born to a human mother on Harn, by-blow of a young distant scion of House Ambarone, she found little fellowship amongst humans or elves in her young childhood.    Hearing of better treatment for humans and half elves among Duke Eltan's folk, her mother moved there and found work in a dairy.    They were well accepted, but her mother passed when she was still young.

Her responsibilities increased till she managed much of the Duchy's herd.    Meanwhile, entranced with the freedoms that Eltan's domain offered to half-elves, humans, and women, she trained avidly with Peacekeeper and Guard elements.  Several times we went on voyages by sea and by Jammer to sell prize beasts.   She began to train at riding her oxen, and discovered to her surprise that it was quite easy for her.    She seemed to have a simple empathy with the huge beasts.

When her father died, heirless, Thalion spoke with his family, and Adle was allowed to inherit his weapons and Gauntlets of Ogre Power.    She was shaken by his death, though they had seldom spoken, and began to ride out further, on adventures.    She practice quickdrawing her longswords and axe endlessly, swapping on for another, until she could change and throw the ax in the midst of combat without losing a beat.

She hunted down troops of human bandits and goblinoids that preyed on farmers and crofters, and began to make a name for herself.    She saved up for horseshoes of speed for her Ox, having them custom made.

Thinking back on her young days, rejected by her father's and mother's people, Thalion's mad project of an army of peacekeepers normalizing good conduct and mutual respect amongst the races began to seem like a worthy cause to invest her life in.    Perhaps a little smitten, she began to ride out in areas where she thought the Duke might be.    So, one day in May, not entirely by chance, she raced toward the sounds of battle, into a clearing where Thalion was hard pressed by a large group of bandits with their own sorceror.

Already traveling at great speed, her ox overbore the bandit chieftain's horse and trampled it.    Her ax seemed to sprout from the sorceror's head of it's own accord, dropping him.    But the bandit chieftain, tumbling clear, threw a poisoned dagger and she fell.

Thalion slaughtered the remaining bandits, and healed her.    The white light from his hands burning out the poison in her veins made her nearly unaware that he looked like he had been rolled in blood pudding.    He knighted her on the spot, and midst strewn entrails and fresh corpse stink, she swore to be his leal knight and to bear strong children for his legions.    They were both a bit surprised by the last part, but the devotion remained when the shock wore off and the surroundings improved.

She has had four children by Thalion.    The oldest, a son, died in the evacuation of Harn, but he and the Oxen helped bring the middle twins out safely.    They have had another son since settling on Arda, but her half-elven sturdiness made the pregnancies easier, and she still seems young.    All of their children, being 3/4 elven, seem even slower to mature than she was, though time touches them sooner than pure blooded elves.

On Arda, Adle works with Calmacia Paurgiliath on preserving the Harnic Blue Ox strain, and in exchange Calmacia worked with her brother Artano to make barding for her huge War Ox.

She serves as an adjutant to Eltan, attached to command, delivering messages, running errands, and problem solving.    The older staff tries hard not to send her into danger, and helps her prepare for further leadership responsibility.

Magic Items

Horseshoes of Speed

These iron shoes come in sets of four like ordinary horseshoes, but they are magical and will not wear out. When affixed to a horse's hooves, they double the animal's speed. There is a 1% chance per 20 miles traveled that a shoe will drop off, and if this passes unnoticed, the horse's speed will drop to 150% normal rate. If two or more are lost, speed returns to normal.

Note:    The set was custom made for her Ox, and she carries a fifth (spare) in the saddlebags.

Gauntlets of Ogre Power

These appear the same as typical handwear for armor. The wearer of these gloves, however, is imbued with 18/00 Strength in his hands, arms, and shoulders. When striking with the hand or with a weapon hurled or held, the gauntlets add a +3 bonus to attack rolls and a +6 bonus to damage inflicted when a hit is made. These gauntlets are particularly desirable when combined with a girdle of giant strength and a hurled weapon. They grow or shrink to fit human to halfling-sized hands.

Axe of Hurling + 1

This appears to be a normal hand axe. With familiarity and practice, however, the possessor will eventually discover that the axe can be hurled up to 180 feet, and it will return to the thrower in the same round whether or not it scores a hit. Damage inflicted by the magical throwing attack is twice normal (2d6 vs. S or M, 2d4 vs. L), with the weapon's magical bonus added thereafter. (For example, an axe of hurling +3 will inflict 2d6+3 points of damage vs. S- or M-sized creatures and 2d4+3 points of damage vs. creatures of size L if it hits the target after being thrown.) The axe will cause only normal damage (plus its magical bonus) when used as a hand-held weapon.

After each week of using the weapon, the possessor has a one-in-eight chance of discovering the full properties of the weapon. In any event, the magical properties of the weapon will be fully known to the possessor after eight full weeks of such familiarization.         The magical bonus of an axe of hurling is determined by referring to the table below:

Magical

  • D20 Roll        Bonus        XP Value
  • 1-5        +1        1,500
  • 6-10        +2        3,000
  • 11-15        +3        4,500
  • 16-19        +4        6,000
  • 20        +5        7,500

Sword +4, Defender

This gives its wielder the option of using all, some, or none of the +4 bonus in defense (improving his Armor Class) against any opponent using a hand-held weapon, such as a dagger, mace, spear (not hurled), sword, etc. For example, the wielder can, on the first round of battle, opt to use the sword as +2 and save the other two bonus factors to be added to his Armor Class. This can be done each round.
